Twitter to No Longer Include Photos & Links In its 140 Character Tweet Limit
May 20, 2016 Social Media Marketing

Summary:

Twitter’s new tweet post update allows for more freedom in creating longer messages.  The company will soon stop counting the links and photos which are a part of the 140 character limit in messages.

Category: Social Media Marketing

Function: Customer Engagement and Retention

From the MarTech Advisor article:

“Twitter Inc. the social media giant, has changed how the characters in Tweets are counted. It now gives users more freedom to come up with longer messages. The company will soon stop counting the links and photos which are a part of the 140 character limit in messages. Although the decision has not been made public, this change could happen in the next couple of weeks. At present links can take up 23 characters even after they are shortened by Twitter and photos can take up 24 characters.

In an official release, Jack Dorsey, the Chief Executive Officer of Twitter said that the company was on the lookout for new ways to display text on Twitter. It was planning to rethink its hard and fast rules about character limits and composition. It would carry out experiments on how the people use the service. Twitter’s 140 character limit was adopted in 2006 because it was a way to send tweets which would fit all the information in a mobile text message. Early this year, the company decided to raise the character limit to as many as 10,000 characters.”
